Energize STW’s huge impact increasing physical activity in schools

We are pleased to share the impact of our work in embedding physical activity into the culture of many primary and secondary schools across Shropshire, Telford, and Wrekin during the 2023-2024 academic year. Our video showcases the incredible progress we’ve made, working with dedicated teaching staff to enhance the health and well-being of children and young people.

Watch our video here to see the huge beneficial impact on young people.

Throughout the year, we’ve seen remarkable improvements in the amount of active learning and movement in schools, in student engagement, wellbeing and behaviour, with schools embracing physical activity as a core element of their daily routine.

Key highlights:

  • 100% of schools using Creating Active Schools programme said activity levels had increased.
    • 93% of these schools said pupil wellbeing improved
    • 86% said movement embedded throughout school life
    • 73% said pupil behaviour improved
  • 1489 Opening School Facilities sessions delivered, enabling 1483 pupils and 139 community users to be active.
  • We delivered 14 School Games events, providing 13 different activities at 10 venues for 100 schools to participate across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

Using the Creating Active Schools framework we’ve empowered teachers in 19 schools to create active learning environments, and we have embraced the Opening School Facilities programme to create opportunities for pupils and the local community to enjoy new activities outside of school hours.

Additionally, you can find out more and watch a video about our School Games during the 2023-2024 academic year. This programme has engaged children and young people from over 100 schools to take part in activities designed to inspire and engage them.
