Opening School Facilities available for the community and pupils with SEND

Yorkshire Sport Foundation submitted the following case study to showcase the success of the Year 2 Opening School Facilities programme in their area.

What is Your Project

  • To improve opportunities for school students and the local community to engage with sports such as Table Tennis and Orienteering. The main target groups within a school context are SEND, Girls and students who had been affected by lockdown suffering with mental health problems.
  • We have targeted student groups for extra curricular activities along with their parents to invite them along for sessions.
We have also run some extremely positive community days based on a Saturday with the community coming along and trying the new equipment and informing them of the opportunities at school.

Key Successes so Far

  • The use of the facilities from our SEND students with one wheelchair user being talent ID in Table Tennis.
  • The community attendance for the school community days with members of the community being shocked of the equipment that they were able to use.

Next Steps

  • To carry on building positive relationships with the local community.
  • Running community clubs that they can come and take part in, such as Rugby Union and Street Dance.
  • To carry on making the local community aware of the facilities that are available for them to use.
  • To further update equipment that the community can use. This will include facilities in the gym and further activities that can be run on more community days.
  • Advertise days, opportunities and facilities with the feeder primary schools as well.
