Unlocking Opportunities: Opening School Facilities
Opening School Facilities is a dynamic programme, breaking barriers and opening doors for schools and communities.
Supported by funding from the Department for Education and part of a collaborative effort with three national partners, including Street Games, ukactive and Youth Sport Trust, this £57 million, three-year initiative is designed to empower schools to open up their facilities and create a vibrant hub for both students and the local community.
Active Partnerships build strong relationships and meaningful partnerships in their local area, supporting schools to open up their facilities outside of school hours.
With an emphasis on inclusivity, the programme focuses on young people attending schools and encourages schools to open their facilities to local community groups.
Working together with local networks and partners, the Active Partnerships identify schools based on data, insights, and local intelligence. Our focus is to address the needs in deprived regions or where facilities are currently unavailable.
What's the impact?
The programme is already making strides in tackling inactivity, providing new opportunities, and offering new ways for people to get active.
To date, the Active Partnerships network has engaged pupils and local communities from across the country in the Opening School Facilities programme.
Over the year 2023 -24, we have highlighted key successes and learnings seen and barriers and challenges faced, and these can be viewed in our latest report.
But what sets this initiative apart is its commitment to sustainable change. This isn’t a short-term funding fix; it’s a long-term commitment that has already surpassed its initial target.
We have a clear focus on working with and supporting groups that face the biggest barriers to getting active, to ensure an inclusive and sustainable positive impact.
Our work tells a story. Take a look at how our efforts have transformed lives, empowered communities, and challenged inequalities.
